Rectangle or Oblong

Rectangular and Oblong face shapes are longer so you don’t want to exaggerate it with beard styles that are long, triangular or pointy at the chin. So opt for a beard that’s very full and let the facial hair grow higher up on the cheeks to stop it from looking so elongated.

You categorically want to avoid goatees and Van Dykes because they will elongate the face. Instead, try facial hair that ranges in length from clean shaven, stubble to a short beard to accentuate your features because this face shape doesn’t need facial hair to balance out any disproportionate areas like other face shapes.

Oval

You can get away with a variety of facial styles that other men can’t. This versatility comes from being the owner of both square and round features, meaning you don’t really need to balance anything out.

You can go with clean-shaven, stubble, chevron mustache, goatee, Van Dyke beard or any length of beard, so the facial hair wold is your oyster, friend!

If going for a beard, you want it to be squared at the jaw, with clean lines on the cheeks, short length on the sides and cut underneath the chin. This balances your oval shape and combines the weight of a full beard with the definition of a well-groomed beard most guys miss. Keeping a rounded, not well-shaped beard will make your face extra oval, which you want to avoid.

Square

Unlike other face shapes, you want to use your facial hair to balance out the square shape of your face. So think long or rounded styles with your facial hair choices.

Clean shaven or stubble will work, but if you want a mustache, go with a horseshoe stache, rounded goatee or even a Van Dyke beard.

For longer beards, avoid a square beard with sharp lines and right angles because it’ll make you look like a lego figurine. Instead, go for a beard where the chin area is rounded or triangular/pointy to offset the square shape of your face.

Triangle

With the sharp features of this face shape, clean shaven is best, because given the prominence of the jawline, most other facial hair styles will make your jaw even wider, which you want to avoid. This is when your head hairstyle will really play a much bigger factor for how you look. See our other video and article about this.

However, if you are dead-set on having some facial hair, go with a ‘beardstache’ – a moustache with a short beard or stubble as pictured above. With this hybrid style, avoid anything too full and thick on the cheeks, which will give the unwanted impression of an even wider jawline. Instead, square off the edges of the stache at the bottom.

Round

The best facial hair styles for you are going to counter the roundness of your face shape. A large, unkempt, rounded beard or rounded edge goatee will make your head look like a bowling ball, so don’t do that.

Instead, go for a goatee with stubble on the cheeks or a Van Dyke beard. This will create the impression of a longer and more pronounced chin.

For a beard, go for a full, square beard – short or long – which is shorter on the cheeks and longer towards the chin to give the appearance of a more chiselled, elongated jaw.

Diamond

The goal should always be to keep hair on the chin to offset the cheekbones to create the illusion of having more balanced bone structure.

So that means you can go with some stubble to give the appearance of adding some size to a narrower chin or even a goatee to fill in the narrower area below your nose. A mustache may accentuate your pointy chin so it’s not advised, but you may be able to get away with one as a beardstache (pictured for Triangular face shapes above), but at that point, you might as well have a beard.

If you’re going to go with a beard, grow it so it’s wider on the cheeks and jawline and squared off on the chin to give the appearance of a fuller face – see the Oval face shape picture above for this type of beard.

Heart

Like a diamond face shape, you want to use facial hair to add some much-needed bulk to a narrow chin and jawline.

So you can go with some stubble all around. Mustaches and goatees will make your face look smaller than it is, so avoid those.

For a beard style, go with one that’s closer on the cheeks but leave more length in the chin and mustache area to add depth and volume to your jawline.

Oval

Symmetrical and well-proportioned, an oval face shape does well with most hairstyles, so the hair world is your oyster. The one thing to do is to get a style with your hair off the forehead to create some volume and angles on top.

The most complimentary hairstyle is a short on the sides and slightly longer on the top cut, similar to a quiff or side part. How long you go depends on your preference but the one thing to avoid is a forward fringe style haircut. Too much hair on the forehead softens your features and increases roundness of your face, which you want to avoid.

Square

Like the oblong or oval face shape, most hairstyles will work with your face shape, even extremely short or longer hairstyles – from buzz cuts to French crops to quiffs. Keep in mind that the shorter you go, the more you’ll look like a military grunt, so that’s the one thing to be aware of.

Classic, neat haircuts like close fades, side parts and short layers complement a square shape best.

Rectangle or Oblong

The longest of the face shapes, a rectangular or oblong face shape falls between an oval and a square, but requires a subtly tweaked hairstyle to ensure the face doesn’t appear even longer than it is.

Avoid taking the sides too short if keeping it longer on the top, as this would make your face look longer. Try a well-proportioned style that doesn’t take the sides too short or leave too much length on top. So try a style that lets the hair fall to the sides and/or across the forehead to add width and ensure your face doesn’t appear narrower than it is.

Round

A round face shape benefits from a haircut that gives it some definition or angles since they aren’t there naturally. For your face shape, you need to think square. A square hairstyle creates the illusion of structure so go for a style with height on the top that’s taken tight at the sides like a pompadour or a flat top. Front fringes will also look great for your face shape.

Diamond

A diamond face shape is one of the less common ones and because of that, you’ll need to be a little more careful to ensure your hairstyle looks great.

Avoid taking the sides too short because given the width of the cheekbones, a hairstyle that’s particularly short on the sides will make your ears look bigger – which you obviously want to avoid.

Hairstyles that add width to the forehead and chin area are going to look best on you. Fringes work well to add texture to the forehead, while longer styles that can be tucked behind the ears are great for accentuating your cheek bones. You can a side sweep or deep side-part hairstyle, and consider growing a 5 o’clock shadow if you want to add some size to a narrower chin.

Heart

Kind of similar to a Diamond face shape, avoid cuts that are very short, especially on the sides, as they’ll accentuate the narrowness of the chin and the width of your forehead. A medium-length swept look is the safest bet. Mid-length and long hairstyles that are kept reasonably thin and light soften the heart shape’s strong forehead.

Triangle

A hairstyle with volume will look best with a triangle face shape. So go for longer haircuts with fuller sides, which will add volume all around.

Hairstyles Girls Love On Guys | Best Men’s Hairstyles for 2020

The most popular men’s hair trends for 2020 are: 1. Adopting a longer, more natural style and letting your hair do its thing. 2. New takes on old classics, like a messy, textured hairstyle. Pretty much take your current favorite hairstyle and finish it off by running your fingers through your hair for a slightly less-polished finish that lets your hair’s natural tendencies shine through. In this video and article, we talk about the hairstyles that girls love on guys in 2020 that you should consider.

Modern Pompadour

This haircut is great for long, short, thick, wavy or curly hair. Longer on top and tight and tapered on the sides – it’s more about a low fade vs a more severe high fade. Style it straight back or slightly to the side using a blow dryer to dry your hair in preferred direction and then use a matte pomade or wax to lock in the style and run your fingers through for a less polished look.

Buzzcut

For those men who want the lowest maintenance haircut possible, or those who have thinning or receding hair, It’s an easy haircut to do at home and doesn’t require shaving with a razor and shaving cream. The hair is buzzed with a clipper set to the closest setting. You could balance out this look with a short beard.

*Don’t forget sunscreen on the scalp, as it’s susceptible to burning!

Textured Flat Top

This looks amazing on black men! Using natural curls to build height on top of your head is like an optical illusion. It builds volume without weighty products. Keep the sides slightly longer than a fade to show off the natural texture and enhance it all around with a curl sponge.

Crew Cut

A classic and low maintenance hair style. The hair is cut close up the sides and back, and it’s shorter at the crown and gradually gets longer toward the front.

Classic businessman (with one change)

A.K.A. the Don Draper. This is basically a classic taper with a very clean, slick side part. Update the Don Draper shiny slick back by using product with a matte finish and have the top of the hair tousled around loosely for a less formal, yet impeccably well-groomed look.

Longer, Natural Hair

This is seen on guys like: Jason Momoa, Brad Pitt in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Timotee Chalamet. If longer hair is what you’re wanting, take note of a few things. Make sure you have a full head of curly or wavy hair. If you don’t have either of these, then this hairstyle is out for you because pin-straight and/or thinning long hair lays flat and looks dead so unless you want to put in a lot of work to get it to look thin and have curls, this isn’t for you. It’s still important to get regular trims. As for styling, choose a low or medium hold and smoothing hair product to help control the hair and enhance the body. Use your fingers, rather than a brush, to encourage natural movement, and once dried, a pea size amount of product is enough.
