Gather The Tools
In order to definitively figure out your face shape, you need to measure your face.
- Flexible tape measure/Tailor’s Tape
- Somewhere to write down the measurements – pen & paper, phone, etc.
Measure Your Forehead
Run your measuring tape across your forehead from hairline to hairline. Make sure you’re measuring the widest part – this is usually around halfway between your eyebrows and your hairline.
Measure Your Cheekbones
The width of your cheekbones is very important when it comes to picking a hairstyle. Getting it wrong can throw off the proportions of certain features like your ears.
Start at just past the outer corner of your eye, lay your measuring tape across the bridge of your nose to slightly past the outer corner of your other eye.
Make sure the tape measure runs at a straight line and rests just above your cheekbones.
Measure Your Jawline
Measure from the tip of your chin to below your ear at the point at which your jaw angles upwards. Multiply that number by two to get your jawline length.
Measure Your Face Length
Run the tape measure from the center of your hairline to the tip of your chin.
If you have a shaved head or receding hairline, estimate the point where your hairline used to be.
Determining Your Face Shape
Now it’s time to determine your face shape! Note which measurement is the largest of the four as this will be important later on. When mentioned later on about measurements being the same or similar, understand that there is up to half an inch of leeway there. So if your jawline is 7.5” and your cheeks are 8”, those would be considered similar in size. Anything over .5 inches would be considered different.
Square
All measurements are fairly similar. The angle of the jaw is sharp rather than rounded.
Rectangle/Oblong
Face length is the largest measurement. Forehead, cheekbones, and jawline are similar in size, within about a half inch of each other.
Oval
Face length is greater than the width of the cheekbones, and forehead is greater than the jawline. The angle of the jaw is rounded rather than sharp.
Round
Face length and cheekbones have a similar measurement. They are larger than forehead and jawline, which also have a similar measurement. The angle of the jaw is soft and much less defined.
Diamond
Face length measures largest. Then, in descending order: cheekbones, forehead, and smallest is jawline. The chin is pointed.
Heart
Forehead measures largest, then your cheekbones, and then your jawline. The chin is pointed.
Triangular
Jawline measures greater than cheekbones, which measures larger than your forehead.
Once you’ve figured out your face shape, you can begin to make more informed choices on everything from your hairstyle, facial hair/beard to your sunglasses.
