As a stylist, I’m well-versed in all things menswear, including trends. While it’s great that more men than ever are trying new things with their wardrobes there are some trends that women just aren’t into.
Know that there is a difference between style (timeless, versatile) and trends (fleeting, extreme) and that a good essential wardrobe is not driven by trends. Here are our picks for 6 men’s fashion trends that women hate!
6 Men’s Fashion Trends That Women Hate
Overly tight skinny denim – There’s a very fine line between trim/slim and tight. Don’t do the latter, nobody wants to see that.
Overly distressed clothing – Speaking of denim, super distressed jeans with a ton of holes in them just isn’t a trend that looks good on men (especially when they’re skin tight too). Stick with dark to medium washes with no or very limited distressing.
Margiela split toe boots – A very hard item to pull off, just keep it simple, these are too fashion forward for most men. Stick to versatile, essential shoes.
Over accessorizing – A ton of stacked bracelets, a huge lapel flower, all these things just add up to way too much going on. Keep it to simple, minimal items and no fewer than one, maybe two at a time.
Large logos or graphics – My stance on them is well-documented and most women will agree, those overly loud, aggressive logos just aren’t attractive.
Dad sneakers – These bulky sneakers are really trendy now and just don’t look good on most body types nor are they versatile enough for different outfits. Go with timeless and classic white or black sneakers.
In this week’s 2 Minute Tuesday, we’re talking black sneakers. Our viewer Ryan inquired about how to wear them properly and which ones are best, so, we’re here to help. Don’t forget to check out our black sneaker picks below!
Black Sneaker Tips
- Keep the rest of your outfit minimal and simple – Black sneakers are quite heavy on the eye so you want things that are understated to wear with them.
- Only wear with grey, white and black – Keep colors simple too, other brighter colors will clash and create a look that’s too aggressive.
- Opt for white-soled black sneakers – As an alternative, white-soled black sneakers give you more versatility with what colors and styles you can wear since they are a bit lighter on the overall look.

here’s a ton of content out there about dressing like a “bad boy” or an “alpha” and usually, it’s not a great look. Many men equate “bad boy style” with confidence and these things are simply not that intertwined as you think. Improving your style should be a pillar to growing your confidence, you shouldn’t adopt an exaggerated persona or image and expect confidence from a costume.
Why “Bad Boy” Style Is Usually Cheesy
It’s Not Really That Stylish
Sure, I love a good leather jacket and dark denim, they should be staple pieces in your essential wardrobe, but most of this so-called “bad boy” style involves a lot of things that don’t look great – over accessorizing with jewelry, out-of-style items, too much embellishment and “look at me” attitude. It’s a little too try-hard.
It’s Not Versatile/Practical
Ultimately it’s too one dimensional for most men. Having good overall style means having a well-rounded wardrobe with a mix of different items for a variety of situations. You can’t wear a t-shirt, boots, and jeans everywhere.
Typical “bad boy” items don’t work for everyone and every body type. Trying to fit your look and personal style into a particular box because it might make you seem cool or confident will only come off as fake. Finding your own individual style and sense of self are way more important (and attractive!) than pretending to be something you’re not.
Proper grooming is one of the biggest things you can do to keep up a sharp overall look and put your best foot forward with women. You don’t have to have a complex routine or a million fancy products, just a few simple steps will help you stand out from the crowd.

7 Grooming Hacks Women Will Notice
Mouth / Breath care – Obviously bad breath is going to be a huge turn-off, so make sure you not only have good brushing habits but also take care of your breath.
Handcare – Dry cracked hands and dirty or unclipped fingernails are just gross! Find a good non-greasy moisturizer to use regularly and keep your nails clean and in check.
Take care of overly dry or oily skin – You’ve got to keep that moneymaker in good shape and women notice the skin on your face (obviously!) much more than you might think. Find the right cleanser and moisturizer that works for your skin type. If your skin gets oily, invest in some facial wipes to tone it down.
Groomed hair – Your hairstyle is definitely a preference thing, but finding not only the right style/cut for your look and making it a regular part of your routine are things every man should put importance in. Regardless of how long or short your particular style is hair, that’s wild/unkempt or gross/dirty are never going to be attractive to a woman.
The right smell – Wearing deodorant/antiperspirant should absolutely go without saying, BO is definitely a no-go, but this also goes for body wash and soap. But there’s also a limit. My stance on cologne is well documented but if you choose to wear it, GO EASY, don’t be the guy who wears too much.
Lip care – Just like your hands, chapped, cracked lips are gross. Women will definitely notice your lips (especially if they’re thinking about kissing you) so do yourself a favor and invest in some proper lip balm and use regularly. Our favorites: R&D, Jack Black, Caudalie, Kiehl’s,
Beard maintenance – Many of you guys chose to have different levels of facial hair, and that’s totally cool, but it’s a privilege, not a right. No matter how much you have that you take good care of it. Keep it trimmed and in check and take care of the skin underneath as well. If your beard is patchy keep it very short or lose it completely and if your beard is more full, make sure it’s trimmed or shaped properly.
Many of you might be saying “I should dress for myself, not for women!” and while that’s true, putting thought and effort into how you dress and how you’ll be perceived by women (or anyone really!) is not only important, but it’s a fact of life.

How To Dress To Impress A Woman
Keep It Simple – Don’t overdress for the occasion and try too hard (ie: wearing a suit when it’s the wrong occasion / too many logos/hyped trends). Simple looks from an Essential Wardrobe like dark denim and a blazer or bomber jacket or chinos and an oxford are great places to start.
Put In Effort – Even though you want to keep it simple, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t put in thought and care to your look.
Fit Is Key – I repeat this all the time (because it’s important) but your clothes and look will be most attractive if they fit you properly and flatter your body type. Need some fit tips? Check out our Fit Guide, it’s all there!
Presentation – Make sure your clothes aren’t wrinkled or dirty. It may seem obvious but taking a few extra minutes to properly iron/steam your outfit goes a LONG way.
Dress For Confidence- Yes, I know this isn’t technically something you wear but in many ways, it’s just as important. Being confident and comfortable in your own skin is super attractive and will enhance your overall appeal and how you’re perceived. Feeling good about what you’re wearing goes a long way to helping you feel confident so it’s all intertwined.

By now you know how important a strong shoe rotation is to your overall wardrobe. As we talked about in our previous video, Shoes Women Hate, your footwear is a big part of what women notice about your right off the bat. Outside of choosing the right style, it’s important to keep in mind that you also need to wear the right shoe for the right occasion, too formal or too casual a shoe with the wrong outfit can throw off your entire look.
In this video, we’re going to flip the coin and run down the key styles that women will really notice. From sneakers to dress shoes, here are 5 shoe styles women love.
5 Shoe Styles Women Love
1. Casual Leather Sneakers – Classic and versatile, they go with almost every casual outfit. Just make sure to keep them clean! White, Gray, Tan, Black.
Penny Loafers – Another classic, they elevate every casual outfit with a little bit of polish. Wear them with denim, chinos, and even dressier business casual outfits.
Chelsea Boots – These boots are super sleek and sexy, a perfect fashion-forward item to give your wardrobe a little bit of edge. Leather or suede works.
Classic Lace Up Dress Shoes – When you’re dressed to the nines the wrong shoe can absolutely ruin how awesome your suit looks. Stick to a clean, classic oxford in dark brown, it looks powerful and professional. Don’t forget to keep them shined.
Lace Up Boots – A nice boot looks amazing with denim or chinos and is a great way to add a bit of ruggedness to your wardrobe.

It’s a fact that one of the first things a woman notices about you is your shoes. So obviously it’s important to make sure your shoe game is on point. We always talk about how important it is to regularly clear out old and out of style items, and shoes are no different. Shoes are a key part of your overall look, and a few wrong choices or out of date items can easily ruin an otherwise great look.

- Square toed dress shoes
Out of date and out of style, get rid of them right now. Get yourself a proper pair of dress shoes instead.
4. White loafers or loafers with contrasting stitching
Your loafers should always have same-color stitching and white loafers are another out of date style nobody should wear. Try our Loafer Guide for better options.
3. Chunky basketball/gym sneakers
The gym or basketball court is fine but outside of that, these shouldn’t be worn with casual clothing. White sneakers or dress sneakers are a much better look.
2. Rubber flip flops
Unless you’re at the beach or pool these aren’t a good look.
Keep them to the bathroom or inside the house, nobody should see these!
