Best Men’s Wallets Of 2019

Just like the right briefcase, a stylish and functional wallet is a smart way to keep your life organized and looking good. We’ve discussed some of our favorite wallets before but we wanted to update it with some new picks and styles. To recap, here are a few things we look for in great wallets:

  1. No Contrast Stitching
  2. Minimal logos/branding
  3. Classic & minimal design

With that said, here are our current picks for the Best Wallets of 2019!

Bryker Hyde – $40-$43

A great value, this bi-fold wallet from Bryker Hyde features excellent leather quality and great functionality with multiple interior slots and an id window. Branding is fairly minimal but there are multiple logos. The wide range of colors and RFID blocking are nice bonuses too.

Herschel – $30

For the man who prefers a minimal carry, this leather card case wallet from Herschel is excellent. It features really nice pebbled leather and multiple slots for cards and cash. Construction and edges are great and the finger cutout is a nice detail for ease of use. There’s a bit more branding than we usually prefer but overall this wallet is a great value.

Herschel  – $89

We also loved this bi-fold leather wallet from Herschel as well. It features the same excellent pebbled leather and clean design. This option features RFID blocking and Tile tracking, which are great security features (there’s also a similar, non RFID version too) and the interior features plenty of card slots and space for bills.

Carl Friedrik – $83

This option from Carl Friedrik is bi-fold / case hybrid, so it’s got a nice slim design but also has a good amount of storage. It features beautiful Italian leather and construction is excellent. There are a variety of color options available too. We loved the very minimal design and thoughtful details like an exterior pocket with finger cutout.

Bellroy – $169

We’re big fans of Bellroy’s goods and their leather bi-fold wallet doesn’t disappoint. It’s made from excellent leather and features a very clean, slim design with great craftsmanship. This version has RFID protection (there’s a non RFID blocking version also) which is a nice bonus too. The interior features 3 pockets, space for bills, and a pull tab feature for convenience.

This Is Ground – $175

Another brand we love, This Is Ground always brings really high-quality design and leathers to all of their products.  We loved the unique magnetic attachment design in this phone case wallet as well as the clean, minimal design with no branding. The interior features just the right amount of pockets and the wallet closes up with a nice, heavy duty zipper.  Good, slim phone wallets are tough to find but this version from This Is Ground really knocks it out of the park.

Top Men’s Briefcases / Messenger Bags For 2019

A stylish and functional bag is one of the most important accessories a man can own and we thought it was high time we updated our previous picks. We love a good backpack of course, but no matter what type of field you work in, carrying your goods in something sharp and professional is important. You’re better than that old, falling-apart school bag.

In this video, we’re running down a batch of the latest and greatest new men’s briefcases and messenger bags for 2019!

Incase – $70

We loved the clean, simple design for those looking for a budget-friendly option. It features a clean, no-frills design and is made from rugged canvas with plenty of padding to protect your goods.  It also comes with a shoulder strap for extra flexibility.

Italic – $250

Another bag with a clean, minimal aesthetic, the Italic bag is a great leather option. It features really nice pebbled leather that feels luxurious, especially for its affordable price point. This bag also comes with a removable shoulder strap (in nylon) and an interior padded laptop compartment. The metal feet on the underside were the real drawback as they can sometimes cause damage if you aren’t careful.

Stuart & Lau – $325

This bag features a nice nylon base with leather accents and matte hardware giving it a very sharp design aesthetic.  While not all leather, it would be an excellent option for those of you who don’t work in super formal environments.  It has nice details with a ton of functional interior pockets and a nice-looking leather shoulder strap with matching hardware. Overall we really liked this bag and felt it was well worth the price given its excellent design and functionality. It comes in multiple colors too.

Bellroy – $590

Dorian is a big fan of their phone cases so we were excited to see one of their briefcases as well.  The Bellroy features really nice leather and a lot of structure, which we really like.  It has a clean, functional design and some nice touches with its interior contrasting color and nicely integrated eyelets for the shoulder straps.  Two things we weren’t in love with were the leather accented nylon shoulder strap and a little bit of excess branding.  It’s on the expensive side but we felt like it was definitely worth the investment for those looking for a modern, structured briefcase.

This Is Ground – $649

We’ve featured some of their products before and we’re definitely fans of their high-quality construction and great leather.  This bag is on the slim side so it’s definitely for the guy who carries less stuff.  It’s got a great minimal design and an exterior pocket for extra storage as well.  The interior is very cool and it features a bunch of different organizational compartments for your extra goods and features an interior magnet set up that works with their innovative mod products.  It’s definitely on the expensive side but well worth the price for its quality.

Frank Clegg – $900

Dorian’s bag mentioned in the video, very high-quality leather and handmade construction.  An investment bag that will last you a lifetime.

Best Travel Accessories

Obviously, we all know traveling can be super hectic; between the crazy lines, delayed flights, and packed planes, there’s a reason there’s a bar right by almost every gate.  Outside of finding the right travel bag, being prepared with the right accessories can make your trip smooth and easy.  Both Dorian and I travel a lot for work so we’ve learned a thing or two about what to bring on trips, and we decided to put together a foolproof list that’s suitable for nearly any journey.  Plus, almost all of these items can be found on Amazon so it will make your pre-trip shopping as easy as a few clicks.

Here’s our go-to list of travel accessories:

Portable steamer

You never know what the iron situation will be where you’re going and a portable steamer is small, light, easy to pack, and super effective.

Small lint roller

A must-have for keeping dark clothing and suits/blazers looking their best, we love this version because it has an easy-to-use covered design.

Jack Spade dopp kit

In addition to having the right bag, a proper dopp kit is going to keep all your toiletries organized and in good order.  We also like this budget-friendly version from Herschel.

Wireless Bose or Sony Bluetooth headphones

Wireless headphones with noise canceling are ideal for plane trips and will keep your tunes or podcasts sounding crisp and clear.  They also keep you feeling much more refreshed and alert by drowning out the excessive plane noise. We also like this budget-friendly version from Cowin.

Eye mask for sleeping

A necessity if you plan on surviving that redeye, they block out all the light so you can get deeper, more restful sleep. We find that the versions that don’t sit right on your eyes (like the ones linked above) are much, much more comfortable and effective.

Cabeau memory foam neck pillow

Speaking of surviving a red eye, a good neck pillow is a must. Memory foam is the best because it packs up super small and is very comfortable. Plus, this one from Cabeau is Tim Ferris approved!

Portable battery from Belkin or Anker

Never miss another ‘Gram opportunity because of a dead phone again. These small, portable batteries will keep you charged up and ready to go.

The Bagel power strip

If you travel internationally you know the hassles of different wall plug adapters. The Bagel is very small and works worldwide to keeps all your devices charged up.

ExOfficio boxer briefs

These outstanding briefs are super durable and quick-drying so you’ll be cool and comfortable all trip. We’re big fans of ExOfficio and have featured them before.

Tech Dopp Kit from This Is Ground

Just like you keep your toiletries organized, having a handy case will keep your cords, chargers, and devices squared away and easy-to-find. We also love the Bandito from This is Ground and the Grid-it from Cocoon.

The Cord Taco from This is Ground

If you’re traveling light, sometimes a small cord organizer is all you need.

So now that you’re properly prepared for a smooth trip all that’s left is to grab some snacks and a drink at the bar, have a safe flight!

16 Accessories Every Man Needs

These are, to me, the 16 accessories every guy needs to own, regardless of your age, occupation, and lifestyle. Some of these items you may not wear often, but there will be an occasion, as a grown man, when you will need them and you’ll be thankful that you thought far enough ahead to take care of them before it’s too late and you’re scrambling at the last minute. I’ve also included my favorites for each of these items below. But these points below are just skimming the surface compared to the much more through Men’s Essential Accessories Series I did recently.

Have questions? Curious what others think?

16. White Pocket Square

Like I’ve mentioned before, every man should have at least a grey suit. Even if you only wear it once every year, you’re going to need a suit. Along with that, looking well dressed is always about the details and a white pocket square is an easily overlooked item that really does make a big impact and it’ll only set you back a couple of bucks.

2016 Holiday Gifts For The Women in Your Life

It’s that time of year again, just like the last two years (on this very site as well as PrimerMag), so I want to show you the gifts the women in your life will love to receive this time of year. Trust me, I know we’re a strange bunch when it comes to gifts, and shopping for all the women in your life can be tough – especially if that means you’ll be giving gifts to multiple women like your wife/girlfriend, mom, mom-in-law, sister, and female friend/co-worker/boss.

There’s a few things to consider in order to deliver a thoughtful, special present to the women in your life:

  • Who are you shopping for?
  • Should you splurge or not on that person?
  • What will she appreciate the most?

So let’s ensure you knock it out of the park when it comes to giving the women in your life an incredible present this holiday season – regardless of your budget.

FYI: If I can toot my own horn for a minute –  I’ve got a 100% perfect track record when it comes to helping my clients pick out gifts for their special ladies. Just saying 😉

Mother / Mother-In-Law

The goal with giving your mother or MIL the right gift is to find something that’s useful and will go with whatever her design/style aesthetic is. With that being said, I truly believe if you can, you should splurge on her. Show her how much you love and appreciate her.

Notebook

With that being said, I love Smythson and Hermes notebooks because not only are they extremely useful, but they’ll come beautifully packaged in their iconic blue and orange boxes, respectively. Your mother (or MIL) will be so excited when she sees the box because she’ll instantly know she’s about to receive a super special gift.

Scarves

Another really great gift is a scarf – I especially love (and own myself) the Louis Vuitton scarf. The fabric is beautiful, silky smooth, and will dress up any outfit. A fun alternative is the Kate Spade scarf that’s easy to wear and stylish.

Home

If she loves anything kitchen-related, then you won’t go wrong with a Vitamix or zoodle maker. More than likely, she doesn’t own these items, but will appreciate how useful and awesome they are. Also, I really like the sleek design of West Elm’s marble and copper serving board and Roar+Rabbit’s Free Form Terrarium which will look great on her desk or next to the sink – these are especially great gifts for your MIL because they’ll be appreciated by her regardless of her design aesthetic.

Food & Wine

Another crowd pleaser, and a gift that I had on last year’s list, is Cakebread’s red and white wine gift set. Any winelover will appreciate these fan-freaking-tastic wines. For something outside of the box, order her a box or 6-month subscription to TryTheWorld.com. Every month, she’ll get a themed box of gourmet foods from all around the world. I actually was given this last year by a client and I have to say the packaging alone was super nice and the items tucked inside were so unique and fun.

$590 – Louis Vuitton Monogram Shawl (Beige, Charcoal Grey, or Night Blue)
$78 – Kate Spade New York ‘Swan Around’ Silk Scarf
$320 – Hermés Ulysse Notebook
$80 – Hermés Ulysse Page Refill
$230 – Smythson Panama Collection ‘Soho Notebook’ (personalize with initials for $12/letter)
$18 – Moleskine Color Hard Cover Notebook (black, red, or navy)
$330 – Vitamix Blender
$160 – Nutri Ninja| Ninja Blender Duo with Auto-iQ
$200 for 6 months – Try the World ‘Signature Box’
$110 – Cakebread Cellars Treasured Classics
$60 – West Elm Marble + Copper Serving Board
$50-$70 – West Elm Roar + Rabbit Freeform Terrariums
$24 – West Elm Mid-Century Turned Leg Tabletop Planter
$24 – WonderVeg Vegetable Spiralizer

Girlfriend or Wife

The challenge with finding the right gift for your girlfriend or wife is that you want to make sure she’ll think it’s thoughtful, special, and enough. Now when I say “enough”, I mean that we want to feel like we opened up something that feels representative of how much you love us because you better bet we’ll be doing the same when shopping for your gift. Buying us something like a pen or coffee thermos feels, well, cold.

Massage

For an incredibly thoughtful and unique gift, pamper her with an in-home massage. Trust me, she’ll love this. My fiancé got this for me as an anniversary present one year and it was so awesome that I don’t know what woman wouldn’t want this. I’m going against my “no gift certificates” policy for significant others because there’s almost no other way to give her something like this without it. Zeel or Soothe are amazing apps where she can order up a massage whenever she wants – they’re like Uber but for massages.

Jewelry

As for jewelry, if your woman is stylish and loves fashion, then I highly recommend Jennifer Fisher’s choker or a close second is Eddie Borgo’s pearl choker. The clean yet unique designs of both items will compliment every woman’s style – I’m definitely crossing my fingers and toes that I get one of these this Christmas. If your lady is more classic, then go with a necklace with her initial(s) – I personally love Jennifer Fisher’s mini gothic letter pendant with pave diamonds. A more budget-friendly option is by Kate Spade. Both are dainty and delicate and will be loved the moment she sets eyes on it.

Clothing

Other than jewelry, we’ll always appreciate a soft, warm sweater/cardigan or a silky robe that’ll make us feel sexy every time we wear it.

Fitness Trackers

If she’s health-conscious, I’d recommend a Fitbit or Apple Watch. If you go with an Apple watch, I would buy the one with the cheapest strap and then buy a couple of after-market watch straps on Amazon (listed my favorites and the ones I use all the time below) since they’re way cheaper and just as nice (think $12 versus $100 on Apple).

Flowers or Perfume

If flowers and perfume is the approach you want to take, I’d recommend Maison Margiela’s perfume below – It literally smells like freshly laundered sheets mixed with white flowers. The scent is so magical and light! There’s also Eric Buterbaugh’s perfume kit which is pricey, but totally worth it. His scents are extremely high-end but you understand why because they perfectly capture the scents of various flowers.

I feel like every woman I know is lusting over Venus et Fleur’s roses – and for good reason! The company has somehow found a way to make their roses last a year! Yep, a full year! They’re beautifully packaged in a box and are the perfect item to sit on her desk every single day for the next 365 days. These roses are definitely expensive, and I’ll always maintain that flowers should be a supplementary gift, so if you don’t want to splurge on the below collections, then get the Venus et Fleur Le Mini Round ($39) as it’ll be the perfect size to sit on her desk all year long without taking up too much room.

$1,475 – Jennifer Fisher Abstract Line Choker (Yellow Gold or Silver Plated)
$275 – Eddie Borgo Pearl Hinged Choker (Yellow Gold, Rose Gold, or Silver)
$20 – Topshop Double Bar Choker
$1,300 – Jennifer Fisher Mini Gothic Letter Pendant with Pave White Diamonds (Yellow Gold, Rose Gold, or White Gold)

$385 – La Perla Silk Satin Short Robe (Pink)

$315 – Eric Buterbaugh Discovery Kit

$160/60 min – Zeel Massage Gift Certificate (price varies based on your city)
$100/60 min – Soothe Massage Gift Certificate (price varies based on your city)

Sister or Friend

I always think shopping for your sister or friend is the easiest because their gifts are less pressure-filled and you can have more fun with it. There’s really no need to go all out – save that for your mother or girlfriend/wife.

Hats

If you’ve ever noticed your sister or friend wearing a hat, then the two options below are the best and most wearable hats out there. I’m personally a huge fan (and owner!) of the Rag & Bone hat, but I’m tempted to pick up this burgundy J.Crew hat because the color (and price!) is 10 out of 10. BUT, if you’ve never seen your sis/friend wear a hat, then DO NOT get them this because it’s for a very specific woman. Instead, go with the bag or wallet and add a nice, personal touch by getting her initials monogrammed on it.

Skincare/Haircare/Makeup

Every woman loves anything makeup or skincare-related which is why the Foreo Luna facial scrubber, Fresh spa set, and Urban Decay eyeshadow palette are so perfect. The eyeshadow colors will compliment every skin color and the Foreo Luna or the Fresh spa set will work wonders for even the most sensitive skin.

Probably the most exciting news that came out of the hair world this year was the official launch of the Dyson hair dryer. Trust me, your sister or friends will know what this is and they’ll will be so excited when they lay eyes on this beauty. If the Dyson is a little too steep, then the Hot Tools blow dryer is one of the BEST budget-friendly tools on the market.

Headphones

If you want to get her something tech-related, gift her Bragi’s earphones. They’re super minimal looking and it’s one of those items that she probably doesn’t have/won’t think to pick up until she’s forced to but will really appreciate how useful they are while working out or riding the subway or walking around town.

Cookbook

Every girl who is half into cooking has been raving about this one cookbook by Chrissy Teigen, who wrote all about her favorite comfort food dishes.

Shoes

And lastly, I’m actually getting my sister this for Christmas, and that’s the classic Adidas Stan Smiths, but with a twist! I’m going to take the shoes to my local mall where they have those stalls that monogram items with gold foil and I’m going to have the right shoe monogrammed in small letters (see photo for example) with her initials. It’s such a chic, stylish yet minimal touch that I know she’ll appreciate.

For Everyone Else Or The Hard To Shop For

For everyone else in your life, whether it’s your aunt, cousin, co-worker, boss, etc, it’s important you select gifts that are useful, yet feel personal. I don’t feel it’s necessary, nor expected, to splurge on pricey gifts for these women in your life unless she’s your boss or a significant person in your life.

The Most AMAZING Food Basket

First up, an easy gift that everyone will love and use right away is a Harry & David gift basket. If you’ve never heard of the company, they’re known for their perfectly ripe, juicy pears wrapped in gold foil. Their food is seriously a work of art and their gift baskets are a true holiday classic that’s not cheesy and stuffed with lackluster food. I’m so excited when clients get me these, you have no idea!

Tea & Coffee Samplers

Other great alternatives are a tea or coffee set. I’m a huge fan of the two companies I featured and personally use their products on a daily basis. Any tea or coffee lover will enjoy these!

Candle Sets

A great gift for you boss, aunt, or cousin is a Diptyque candle set (the BEST luxury candles out there IMO!) or the stylishly designed RBT wine carafe.

Skincare & Water Bottle

For your cousin or co-workers, they’d definitely appreciate goodies from cool-girl brand, Glossier, or a sleekly designed rose gold water bottle. Glossier offers gift sets, but I put together 4 of their must-have items that’ll create the perfect beauty kit for her.

Carbonated Water Maker

Another great gift, and one I’ll be getting some ladies this year, is a SodaStream carbonated water maker. I love carbonated water and how easy it is to use this machine. She can also make her own sodas, too.

Leather Pouches

Every time I travel, I use a smaller dopp kit to store my cords/plugs, but it’s also great at protecting makeup and sunglasses. If I’m going to a coffee shop to get some work done, I store all of my cords and chargers in their cable rollup – it’s an easy and stylish way to stay organized.

Dopp Kit or Toiletry Bag

If you ever travel, even if it’s just across town for the night, or to the gym, then you absolutely need a dopp kit or toiletry bag. No proper gentleman should ever be without one.

Why Own a dopp kit or Toiletry Bag?

The reasons you need one are many, but allow me to give a woman’s perspective and reasons for a moment.

In dating and life, we’re always looking at the smaller, subtle details to learn a little more about a person. We’re more sensitive to these subtleties and when a client asks why a dopp kit is important to own, I tell him that when a woman sees a man is organized and respects himself enough to have nice things, it makes us feel validated, like we found “a good one” because this small detail supports a notion that he probably has his life together and is a potentially good mate. It’s a very visceral, biological reaction that we get.

I often say it’s a similar thought to the old saying, “A messy bed equals a messy head” meaning that the way someone’s bed looks gives you some insight into their mental state.

On top of that, it’ll make traveling or going to the gym that much quicker and easier for you by keeping all your toiletries nice and organized. It’ll also help protect your clothing and luggage if you ever have any toiletries leak or spill.

What should a Dopp Kit do?

  • It should carry your toiletries, of course.
  • You also want it to be easy to use. There’s a lot of dopp kits out there, but my favorites are always the zip top style (see my choices below for examples) because the other styles aren’t as easy to pack or access items without having to move other things around. I had a client take a big chunk of out his finger with his razor while carelessly going through his non-top loading Dopp Kit and that’s what started me on the quest to find the perfect one. The next best alternative is the wide-mouth style (see the Shinola example below), but I find these tend to sacrifice some storage space to have the hinge. Even the original Dopp kit does this. My example below is the best I found with a hinge because it takes up less space than similar bags.
  • The last thing your Dopp Kit should do is last for the rest of your life. Unless things change dramatically over the course of your life, this should be the last one you ever buy. So if you’re hesitant because of pricing, don’t be. The cost per year will be so small that it’s absolutely worth it.

What Should it be made of?

Like with all the other bags I recommend in this series, I think there’s just no substitute for leather. It doesn’t stain as easily, and those stains will happen much quicker than your other items since it’s close to a lot of water and toothpaste, etc. Also, leather just looks much classier. Cloth or plastic alternatives are okay, but they just don’t compare, in my eyes.

What color should it be?

Just like all your other accessories, black or brown are my favorites. You can definitely go with other colors since not many people will see it, but I always stick to the classics here. Do you need to match it to your weekender bag? I would default to yes, because why not? But if you really like a brown dopp kitt and own a black weekender bag, then I don’t see an issue with that.

The Best Dopp Kits or Toiletry Bags

Jack Spade Leather Dopp Kit

Buy the Jack Leather Dopp Kit

It is my absolute favorite and one I’ve gifted to a lot of family and friends over the years. It’s simple, not too big or small, and has my favorite zip top design, so it’s very easy to access your items. I like just the simple pocket on the top, as well as the small side pockets for items that can fit there. Like all dopp kits should have, it of course has a waterproof lining, so if anything spills, it won’t be a total disaster for the items in your luggage.

I’d say that this one is perfect in every way.

Shinola Travel Kit

This is one of the few traditional style dopp kits that I could find with a hinge top opening, which allows you to access the entire compartment. Shinola’s leather is really damn good and even though it only comes in black, if you prefer this shape over the zip top style, this one is definitely for you.

This Is Ground Tech Dopp Kit

While these are not technically a toiletry bag or dopp kit, they call it their “Tech Dopp Kit”, I’ve found the multiple size opens and construction as close to perfect as possible. The only thing it’s missing is the waterproof lining, but as long as you’re relatively careful with packing your liquids, it wouldn’t call this a deal breaker.

I show the different sizes in the video at the top of this page, but I would recommend you get their “regular” size since it’s comparable to your average dopp kit’s size. But if you want something smaller or bigger, I think it’s great that they have those options available, too.

Definitely get it monogramed for that little extra special touch!

KILLSPENCER Dopp/Folio 2.0

Like all their products, it has a nice, supple leather with a great, tactical edge. I like it a lot because it has a unique look compared to all the other dopp kits out there and the inside is fully waterproof, so if anything spills, it won’t be a total disaster. While not a requirement, when you’re not using it as a dopp kit, it can also double as a folio by squishing it down a little bit. I thought this was a nice touch, but I don’t know how often it would be used like this. It’s definitely on the larger side of the spectrum, so if you’re looking for a larger dopp, this one is right for you.
