Why A Man’s Watch Matters To Women

We often talk about how important accessories are to your overall look and wardrobe. When done well, they add that extra 10% that pulls everything together and really lets your personality shine. We don’t recommend a ton of accessories but watches are one of the most important ones. It’s true that the watch you wear says a lot about you, whether you like it or not. That’s especially true when it comes to the opposite sex. Since you’re probably going to ask, no, it doesn’t matter AT ALL how expensive your watch is, let’s just get that straight. But that doesn’t mean watches aren’t something women care about.

Here are the reason why a man’s watch matters to women!

SHOWS SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR LIFESTYLE

Whether you’re wearing a Timex, Apple Watch, or a Rolex, the watch you wear will give a woman a few clues as to what your lifestyle is like, and that’s important when we are getting to know you. Maybe you’re a sporty guy and you’re into a G-Shock. Or, you’re more of a tech guy and an Apple watch is your vibe. Either way, it lets women know a bit about who you are.

SHOWS YOU PAY ATTENTION TO THE DETAILS

Like with all of your wardrobe, the details matter and women notice the details.  From the fit of your clothes to your haircut, each small component combines to form an important part of the whole.  Watches are no different. The right watch and style choices on your wrist show you care about the right details.

SHOWS HOW CULTURED YOU ARE OR AREN’T

Maybe you think watches are redundant since you have a phone, sure, we get that. But, going that extra step is going to add another layer to your style and show that you’re about more than just the absolute bare minimum, and that’s definitely really sexy. But, it’s important to consider what you’re wearing and when just like your shoe choice. You wouldn’t wear Jordans to a wedding so you should consider what watch choices you’re making too.

INDICATES WHERE YOU MIGHT BE IN LIFE

No matter where you are on your journey, personal or style-wise, your watch choice is a big indicator of where you are and where you are going. Like we said before, women (well, the right women anyway) aren’t concerned with how fancy or expensive your watch is, but knowing where you’re at and where you’re going is important.

How Many Rings Should Men Wear?

Over-accessorizing is a common problem a lot of guys fall prey to.  While we definitely believe the right accessories can really elevate your look, it’s important to know how to do it right.  In this episode of 2 Minute Tuesday we’re answering a viewer question about rings.  Should a man wear them?  If so, how many are too many?

1 Ring Per Hand Max

Stick to this rule as the be-all, end-all of ring rules.  Any more than that and you’re going to look like you are trying too hard.

Skip The Thumb Ring

Thumb rings are a definite no-go, they just come off as tacky and cheesy.  Keep your rings to your forefinger, middle finger, and maybe your pinky.

Mixing Metals Is Ok

We’re not diehards about not mixing metal types with rings and watches, but it does look best if your rings are somewhat consistent with your watch or other accessories.

Are Smartwatches Stylish or Fashionable?

In this week’s 2 Minute Tuesday, we’re talking about smartwatches. Now a pretty common men’s accessory, there are a bunch of different styles and brands. But, are they stylish? What’s the right way to wear them?

Don’t forget to check out our in-depth guide about men’s watches for all of our watch style tips and picks.

Smartwatch Style Tips

  1. Only wear with casual and business casual – The look and style of a smartwatch is really only suited to your casual wardrobe. So, if you’re going to be dressing more formally in a suit or blazer look, opt for a more formal style of watch.
  2. Mix up your look – The interchangeable bands offer you a great opportunity to mix up the look and style of your smartwatch, so don’t be afraid to experiment with different colors and leathers.

Why “Bad Boy” Style Is Usually Cheesy

here’s a ton of content out there about dressing like a “bad boy” or an “alpha” and usually, it’s not a great look. Many men equate “bad boy style” with confidence and these things are simply not that intertwined as you think. Improving your style should be a pillar to growing your confidence, you shouldn’t adopt an exaggerated persona or image and expect confidence from a costume.

Why “Bad Boy” Style Is Usually Cheesy

It’s Not Really That Stylish
Sure, I love a good leather jacket and dark denim, they should be staple pieces in your essential wardrobe, but most of this so-called “bad boy” style involves a lot of things that don’t look great – over accessorizing with jewelry, out-of-style items, too much embellishment and “look at me” attitude. It’s a little too try-hard.

It’s Not Versatile/Practical
Ultimately it’s too one dimensional for most men. Having good overall style means having a well-rounded wardrobe with a mix of different items for a variety of situations. You can’t wear a t-shirt, boots, and jeans everywhere.

It’s Inauthentic
Typical “bad boy” items don’t work for everyone and every body type. Trying to fit your look and personal style into a particular box because it might make you seem cool or confident will only come off as fake.  Finding your own individual style and sense of self are way more important (and attractive!) than pretending to be something you’re not.

What To Wear To An Interview [2 Minute Tuesday]

You all know how important it is to look great at a job interview but you also want to be dressed appropriately. So, in this episode of 2 Minute Tuesday we’re addressing a question from our viewer Joe about What To Wear To An Interview.

Extra special thanks to our friends at The Tie Bar for sponsoring this video! Don’t forget to check out all our outfit picks for each type of interview below.

As an overall rule, keep things simple and understated.  You don’t want to stand out in a negative/showy way.

Formal – Banking, Law, Medicine

The most conservative look, you definitely want to stick to a charcoal or navy solid suit, white shirt, and simple navy, grey, or brown tie. Understated is the move here.

Wear a suit but you don’t need to go as conservative. Stick with a solid suit but mix up the shirt and tie a bit with some pattern – try a polka dot tie, for a little bit more personality.

Casual – Startup, Creative

Potentially the most confusing type of interview to dress for, it can be tough to figure out how casual to go. You want to dress up but not too much, you don’t want to seem stuffy. It’s better to be slightly overdressed than totally underdressed. Try a bomber or a blazer with denim or chinos. You can wear a tie, but it’s not necessary.

Bomber

Blazer

What To Wear To A Wedding

By now you probably have a stack of summer events you’ve RSVP’d to, from weddings to engagement parties, so now tough part begins, attempting to understanding that dress code and figuring out what the hell to wear. Unfortunately, we live in an age where dress codes have become more and more confusing and unnecessarily complex. But the good news is, I’m here to help you figure it all out and, more importantly, help you out with what to wear.

To begin unraveling what the hell “Beachy Vacation Casual Chic” or “Game Of Thrones-inspired forest semi-formal” really means, it’s important to think about the event and put it in context with four main types of dress code: black tie, formal, semi-formal, and casual. Once you do that, it’s as simple as can be. Stick to the four following examples and dress accordingly.

The Invite Says: Black Tie

The most formal code for obvious reasons, a black tie dress code means tuxedo only.

What To Wear: A tuxedo

This isn’t the place for a suit so embrace your James Bond moment. There are lots of tuxedo options these days, from navy to grey, but if you’re unsure, stick to the classic: black tux, white shirt, black bow tie, and white pocket square you can’t go wrong and provided everything fits properly, you’re going to look amazing.

The Invite Says: Black Tie Optional

Also Known As: Formal

This is the most common type of dress code for evening weddings and, similarly, formal events. You’ll see some people in tuxes but suits will be most common.

What To Wear: A tuxedo or dark suit

By all means, be the best-dressed man in the room and wear a tuxedo, I encourage it. But, a classic dark-colored suit, like charcoal or midnight navy, works equally well. Keep your shirt choice simple and go with white and keep the color in your tie to a minimum. Ideal combos include a white shirt with a simple black, silver, burgundy, or navy tie. I don’t really recommend a ton of patterns or colors here as it’s not really the place.

The Invite Says: Cocktail Attire, Evening Attire or Something with Formal

Also Known As: Semi-Formal

The most common type of dress code, especially for weddings and events in the afternoon or evening.

What To Wear: A suit or blazer with a tie

Depending on the time of the event (day or night) most suit and tie combinations will leave you looking like a sharp-dressed man. Charcoal, Navy, and patterned suits all work for this dress code. If it’s an afternoon or daytime event and outdoors, you could also wear a lightweight cotton suit or blazer combination, especially if it’s going to be hot. Feel free to add a pop of color or print as a personal touch if you’re feeling adventurous. A tie isn’t mandatory, but I always recommend one for events like this.

The Invite Says: Anything with “Resort”, “Beach”, “Garden Party”

Also Known As: Casual

Sure, it’s the broadest category but also potentially the biggest minefield. The most important consideration here is location and time of day. Daytime and beach events are pretty much an open field but I always say ‘dress to impress”.

What To Wear: Dressy Casual Shirts and Pants

Simple cotton, chambray, or linen shirts, chinos, and cotton dress pants work best. For a stylish touch, I recommend throwing on a silk knit tie. For an event that’s slightly more formal, say summer weddings and engagement parties or an evening event, dress up your chinos and shirt with a lightweight cotton or wool blazer and throw on a pair of loafers. You can also feel comfortable wearing all types of colors and patterns here, provided they’re appropriate for the event.
